IN THE BEGINNING: WORD AND WORDS 3

Our summation from last week's teaching was “Before there was the beginning, the heaven and the earth, there was a dateless, sourceless, not created God, called the word.”

This we saw by taking an exhaustive look at Moses and John’s rendering of Genesis 1:1 and John 1:1. Let’s explore further.

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” (‭‭Genesis‬ ‭1:1‬ ‭KJV‬‬)

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
‭‭(John‬ ‭1:1‬ ‭KJV‬‬)

Both writers were obviously talking about the same thing but from different perspectives. While Moses introduced God as the creator of the heaven and the earth who was before the beginning. John, building on the writings of Moses as foundation, introduces an interesting viewpoint: the word as God.

John’s admission is that the word was God and therefore is God. Notice his use of the definite article “the”, it portrays specific characteristics. That is, “the word” is specific and characterised as God.

If the above is understood, bringing Moses and John’s writing together. We can boldly state thus without being wrong; IN THE BEGINNING THE WORD CREATED THE HEAVEN AND THE EARTH.

John continues in verse 3;

“All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”
(‭‭John‬ ‭1:3‬ ‭KJV‬‬)

The word is the “him” John is referring to. All things were made by the word. Everything that was made by implication created, was by the word. Except the word made or created a thing, it cannot be.

“All things” will also refer to what Moses described as the heaven and the earth.

Applying John’s submission we can further say that nothing was made or created in the heaven and the earth without the word.

At this point, it is safe to say the word is the creator of all things: the heaven and the earth and all in them.

Since the foundation of John’s writing is the book of Genesis, the book of the beginning. Looking at Genesis, we will see how the word created the heaven and the earth.

Therefore, let us study Genesis 1 to reveal how the word created the heaven and the earth.

To be continued…
