As we navigate this year, we must let the written word of God be our direction. We must accept the teachings and patterns laid down for us in the word.
One of such patterns is this—that prayer is a lifestyle.
From scriptures, we see that Jesus—who is God—became incarnate, and walked the earth as man. And one thing that was outstanding about his life was prayer—He prayed again and again.
“Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,”
—Luke 3:21 KJV
“And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray.”
—Mark 6:46 KJV
“And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.”
—Luke 6:12 KJV
“Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.”
—Matthew 26:36 KJV
From the scriptures above, we can see Jesus praying during his baptism by John, after feeding the five thousand men with five loaves of bread and two fishes, pulling all-nighters, and finally, a few hours to his death at Gethsemane.
It shows that prayer or praying is a part and parcel of our daily and momentous living. In all these we see a pattern—prayer is consistently constant; in season and out of season.
Note: He did not wait for special occasions before praying. He did not wait to have a breakthrough or testimony before he prayed.
He prayed in happy and sad moments, conducive and non conducive times.
Do you pray with this pattern of praying, in and out of seasons? If not, make it your way of life this year. Put yourself to pray without ceasing and season.
This year, we must take the position of prioritizing prayers driven by the patterns seen in the written word. Not to engage in any type of prayers if we can’t find them captured in the written word of God as seen in the Bible.
So, Why will Jesus prioritize prayer with such consistency?
Being God, did he have to pray?
Even if he should pray, why that much?
Next week, we will try to answer the 'why' in the consistency and intensity with which Jesus prayed.
