The word of God is not a trend: it doesn’t become something else today, that it was not 2000 years ago, because the economy is hard. It is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrew 13:8).
As we navigate this year, we must let the written word of God be our direction. We must accept the teachings and patterns laid down for us in the word.
One of such patterns is this—prayer is a lifestyle.
“And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;”
—Luke 18:1 KJV
It is a common knowledge in many settings, that we need to pray to lead a successful life. We find many people praying daily for different reasons, and yet, often times, the "why" is not truly known. And it is very important, to know why we pray.
For many, prayer is what we do when we're in trouble, in need, or celebrating a victory. And while it is true for all these, from scriptures we also see that prayer is so much more. .
If we pray only when in trouble or in need, we make prayer a need-based activity. When we pray like this, all we do, will center around asking for things.
So, we'd spend time bargaining with God over our desires, and how he should meet them.
God becomes a businessman, and prayer, the transactionary tool.
Also, if we pray only when we have a victory to celebrate, then we deny the grace of God in the seemingly 'non-victorious' moments, and we live a lie.
The drive for prayers is not anchored on acquiring material possessions. This should be obvious enough, as we have many who don’t pray, and are among the wealthiest people. So, praying just because you want material possessions, is praying amiss.
We must ask ourselves why we pray. This year, revisit the "why" of the things you do; especially praying.
It is not enough for us to pray, we must know the "why". Many times, we focus on "what" to pray for. It's time to know the "why".
By looking at some prayer patterns from the scriptures, we'll see the "why", and as we apply it to our lives, we will navigate the year successfully.
