This year, we must take the position of prioritizing prayers driven by the patterns seen in the written word. Not to engage in any type of prayers if we can’t find them captured in the written word of God as seen in the Bible.
So, Why will Jesus prioritize prayer with such consistency?
Being God, did he have to pray?
Even if he should pray, why that much?
“Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.”
Matthew 26:36-39 KJV
The eve to his crucifixion, Jesus was sorrowful, crushed with the weight of what was about to happen—bearing the sins of the world; past, present and future. So troubled, he made the following statement “O my Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me”.
For a moment, you will think Jesus was about to throw in the towel, then while praying he said these words “nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.”—beautiful and reassuring words that screams “I submit to your will Father.
From the above we observe the why of Jesus’ prayer at Gethsemane, it was for him to remain in the will of the father. Prayer keeps us always in the will of the father.
See Luke’s account of the same event.
“Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.”
Luke 22:42-43 KJV
Angels came and strengthened Jesus after he prayed. A close study will show us the why of Jesus’ prayer. This is a pattern of the why of prayer—it transforms us.
First, he submitted to the desire of the Father regardless of the weight of the burden.
Second, he was strengthened by angels to carry on with the assignment.
Jesus was affected by the prayers.
Prayer changes things but, more so, it changes the one praying.
