“And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
—Acts 2:1-4; KJV
This is the beginning of the church, and already the pronouns in use are, 'they' and 'them'. This paints a picture that is contrary to the "me, myself and I" notion.
“And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness. And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.”
—Acts 4:31-32; KJV
Again, 'they' and 'them' are used to refer to believers. A look at verse 32, has the writer introduce these beautiful choice of words to us—“one heart” and “one soul”. These are not flimsy choices of words, but portray a deeper meaning when compared to 'they' and 'them'. They are like the amplified forms of 'they' and 'the'.
The words “one heart” and “one soul”, make it clear that the focus is not on a single individual but on a group of people. In fact, it reads, “And the multitude of them that believed".
We have seen from two scriptural references, which also tell of the church, that the "solo-rider" attitude of some believers is definitely not scriptural.
Again, when Jesus had to send his disciples out, He sent 'them'—
“After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.”
— Luke 10:1; KJV
Dear friends, for the three consecutive weeks, we have been on the teaching, “pray for me”. Today, we are making the painting more vivid, by showing again that the believer is nota Lone Ranger. The Christian life is not based on a do-it-yourself way of life.
We are to know this and take advantage of the family of Christ that we are a sure part of. Pray for other belivers. Ask them to pray for you. Pray for one another!
“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;”
—Ephesians 6:18; KJV
