It was a beautiful evening, after the days work, and we were all set for the next town. Everyone boarded the boat. Our destination was set; the gentle wind kissing against our sail, giving us the right momentum to take us to our next call.
We said our goodbyes to those on shore as we sailed into the darkness of the night and unto the next town. With the soothing breeze on our skins, we started to unwind and recount the day's activities, so tired some of us fell asleep.
“Suddenly, a ferocious tempest arose, with violent winds and waves that were crashing into the boat until it was all but swamped.” (Mark 4:37 TPT)
Between the boisterous wind that sought to send us to the bottom of the sea, and the pandemonium created by the men in the boat as they feared for their lives, I did not know which was scarier.
By now, everyone was alert. Those who could, prayed for their lives and others were too terrified to move... “But Jesus was calmly sleeping in the stern, resting on a cushion.” (Mark 4:38 TPT).
“This could not be happening! The one person that could help at this time, was asleep.” “Who on earth slept in the middle of a storm?”
'So we shook him awake, saying, “Teacher, don’t you even care that we are all about to die!” Fully awake, he rebuked the storm and shouted to the sea, “Hush! Calm down!” All at once the wind stopped howling and the water became perfectly calm.'(Mark 4:39 TPT)
Truly, who did that? Who slept through a storm? Either you were drunk to stupor, or you knew what we all did not know.
And going by the fact that Jesus stood up and calmed the storm, it meant the latter was true: he knew what his disciples did not know.
He knew too well not to be scared. He knew he had authority over the wind and the storm. That the storm could not break him or sink a boat he was in. So, while everyone was scared to death, he was sleeping, even with a pillow.
