'On your marks, get set, go!', got me running with all the energy in me, headed for the finish line. Then I took a quick look behind me to see how the rest of the competitors are doing. Noticing how far they were from me, I was certain I had this one in the bag already.
With every step I took, I could feel my heart beating faster and louder, and my thigh and leg muscles getting more tense. At this point I was almost gasping for air.
Suddenly, the bell sounded, ushering in the last lap. I lifted up my head to see the finish line, and by this time I could hear the footsteps of the competitors very close to me.
I saw the closest competitor coming to overtake me, and with every energy within me, I tried preventing it. I wasn't able to though, and ended up totally exhausted. I watched dumbfounded and terribly pained, as the others also ran past me with 'jet-speed'.
“Where did they get that energy from” I asked myself. And before my brain could even come up with an answer or better still, a hypothesis, I saw them way ahead of me crossing the finish line. I ended up the Seventh out of eight participants. I was shattered. However, I learnt something that day:
“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”
(Proverbs 4:7 KJV)
I knew the race required speed, but what I did not know was that, this was a marathon and not a dash.
It is wisdom to have speed, but understanding of the race helps you know when and how to apply it. It is always more of finishing strong than starting fast.
It is not enough to know what to do. Knowing when to do it, where to do it, and how to do it, is also important. All the “when” “where” and “how” talks about understanding the times and season of your life.
Know where you are and what is expected of you. It may be the valley of the shadow of death, and right there you have to know it's time to scream; “I shall fear no evil”. And if it is the mountain top, it is not time to be puffed up but time to let your light shine, so much that men will see it and glorify God.
Before you run today, take a while. Seek understanding of the way to go. Meditate on the provision of heaven for you. Meditation is a door way to understanding the “what”, “when”, “where” and the “how” of life.
