The biblical proverbs 31 woman has been a well of instructions and wisdom to women for generations. She has been a point of reference when eulogizing women of exemplary character, no doubt young girls have been inspired by it and men in their hearts have looked for her qualities in women they seek to wife.
It is striking to note that little has been said concerning the man, even when he is found to begin the chapter. I believe the instructions King Lemuel's mother gave to him are still relevant in our time. These instructions if applied by men will make more responsible and exemplary men. So, let's dig in.
The Bible did not say if King Lemuel was losing his ways or troubled but one thing is clear, his mother gave him a set of instructions to guide him as becoming of a King.
The first of her instructions was; “Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.” (Proverbs 31:3 KJV)
I like the way the message bible puts it; “Don’t dissipate your virility on fortune-hunting women, promiscuous women who shipwreck leaders.” (Proverbs 31: 3 MSG)
Virility here talks about the strength associated with masculinity, it depicts vigor and energy of a man. So, her instruction to King Lemuel is don't waste your strength, your youthful vigor and energy on women who seek wealth without working for it, especially by marriage.
She goes on to caution him about promiscuous women. It has been said "behind every great man there is a woman" please note, no one said categorically what this woman is doing behind the man, my point is, the wrong woman will either make a man great or bring down a great man.
Remember Samson and Delilah, David and Uriah's wife, Solomon and his many concubines. Joseph was lured by Potipher's wife, thank God he ran away.
At this point, it will be right to say the proverbs 31 man does not waste his vigor and energy chasing after worldliness in a woman. It goes to tell that he himself is not promiscuous and he perfectly understands where and on what to give his energy to.
