I didn’t know which hit the worst, the thick smell of antiseptic that filled the air or the soreness in my throat.
I tried opening my eyes but it was the hardest thing I remember doing in a long while
“Nkechi, oh my God..”
I’d recognize that melodious timbre, almost soft ‘sing along’ voice anywhere.
Stephanie.
“How are you? Nurseeee!!!”
I struggled a bit with the tubes in my mouth but was unsuccessful.
“Calm down dear, you’re okay. Arrghh, were are these nurses when you need them?” She pressed a button by my side in frustration and sat by my side.
“This is nothing short of a miracle, the doctors thought it would take longer for you and argued if lCU was the best place for you or not?”
ICU?
Wait how long have I?
Where is Jay?
All the questions seemed to have come at once and my head began throbbing horribly.
I made a gesture at Stephanie
“What is it NK?” She looked at me with rapt attention, her eyes following my every move.”
“Ohhh...You want to write? Okay” she dug through her bag hurriedly and handed me a pen and a small note pad.
With all the strength I could muster, I wrote
How long have I been here?
Then, passed the note to Stephanie,
“Three weeks” she sighed
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe. I wrote again
What happened?
“I came visiting and found you unconscious. The doctors said you overdosed on some drugs. I knew something was up, NK. You should should have told me. I was afraid you wouldn’t make it” She began sobbing
“Anyways,” she cleaned her eyes, “you’re here now and that’s what matters.”
I gave her a thumbs up and she giggled.
I picked back the pen weakly.
Jay said to say Hi
Stephanie’s brow furrowed quizzically, her eyes mirroring confusion
“Who is Jay?”
I held her gaze and tears uncontrollably rolled down my cheeks.
Stephanie gasped softly
“You mean you? ....He?.......”
I nodded
“Thank you Jesus!” She cried out.
