Three steps: Heart, words and tangible reality. The first two must be in sync for the last to manifest what is said.
Oil wells around the world are highly treasured and usually secured. Same goes for every other location that holds the prized possessions of the earth.
Man’s heart (not the physiological organ), but the inner self, the seat of wisdom and understanding, is more treasured than all of these put together and so deserves greater protection.
A man's life goes in the direction of his words—the usage of his tongue, which is rooted to the content or state of his heart. If men will enjoy good fruit of the tongue or speak life, they must first, have good seeds in their hearts.
The seed gives birth to the fruit.
For this reason and more the heart holds the treasures of one's life and is synonymous to a treasure.
“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
Matthew 6:21 KJV
The heart as a treasure must be guarded. No wonder the Bible says: “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
Proverbs 4:23 KJV
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Proverbs 4:23 NIV
The usage of the word “guard” points to securing. It has its roots in ancient cities, where fenced walls were erected around a city with a gate. The gate was the point of control through which people and animals gained accesse into the city.
Only approved individuals, animals and goods were allowed through the gate and into the city.
The same picture is painted for the heart: guard it by building a fence around it and secure its gates from unwanted entities. The gates of the heart are points through which the outside world gains access to the heart.
The heart as it were, possesses more than one gate and all must be secured against unwanted contents that seeks to defile it.
What are the gateways to the heart that we can pick out from Proverbs chapter 4.
“My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
Proverbs 4:20-23 KJV
The ear.
The eye.
We shall consider these gates subsequently how we can effectively guard them.
